Integrated Judaism and a Remixed Approach to Tikkun Olam

Tikkun Olam has become a mantra for progressive Jewish communities, particularly in their embrace of social action. This talk examines how Tikkun Olam can be "remixed" in a way that provides an integrated approach to Judaism that balances themes of universal interest with an emphasis on the particularities of Jewish tradition. It explores the origins and history of Tikkun Olam in Jewish tradition and traces its sociological development in American Judaism. In addition, the discussion illustrates why Tikkun Olam must be part of an overall program that emphasizes Jewish practice if transmission of the tradition is the goal.
